Choosing your BMX race bike frame at Gear2win

The BMX frame is undoubtedly the most important part of a BMX Race Bike, and will affect how the bike feels and handles to ride.

There are a few fundamental choices to make, the first being the material of the frame. Whilst most good frames are made from aluminium, there are certain brands trying to break into the market with carbon fibre. Until now, although the carbon BMX frames can in some cases be lighter than aluminium, the fact that it is super expensive and very easily damaged beyond repair puts the carbon frame behind the aluminium frame when it comes to most riders first choice.

The better brands of BMX race frame use a method for shaping the tubes called hydroforming. This method of shaping the tubes gives the manufacturers the ability to increase stiffness whilst keeping the weight lower. The Pure BMX race frame is a perfect example of how hydroforming can improve the handling and feel of the bmx bike on the track.

The right geometry can make a big difference

Another very important aspect on a BMX race frame is the geometry that is used. In the USA most frames are built with a very ‘long’ style. This longer geometry makes the bike very stable at high speeds, and fast on long corners.

In Europe, the more technical and sometimes very steep tracks lend themselves to a more aggressive frame geometry. A shorter or more aggressive frame design will make the bike faster on tight corners, and will make the bike far easier to lift through technical sections. The shorter geometry frames are more suited to young riders, this design will give the feeling that the front wheel is lighter, which is a big advantage in lifting, and will also give the rider more confidence to push the limits.

We have seen that shorter geometry frames like the Pure BMX race frame have been the number one choice for almost all riders that try different frames back to back on tight technical tracks.
